Inspired by a lodge-cabin atmosphere, the design proposal consists in creating a warm wooden frame structure, as a container for the user. The visual secuence repetition transforms the triple height space into a cozy burguer restaurant.
The frame system scales the user into space and works as an element to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere as aswell.

A space to inspire musicians.

Why ?
Music Studios have a tendency to be closed, cold clustered, visually saturated, artificially lit spaces. No sunlight, no spacial communication, no inspiration.
We decided to approach this concept differently:
To transform a 1920’s house in Mexico City´s into a warm home- alike, inspirational music studio.
How ?
First, we took the japanese “ Ma “- space concept on the entrance of the project to create a transition between the noise of the city and the interior of the studio. You enter through a very dark, acoustically isolated tunnel with an atmospheric sound triggered by the body´s movement. It´s almost hard to see with a light so low, a paradox to old studios lighting. A couple of feet away at the end of the tunnel, two doors are waiting to be pushed and then you enter The Chapel.
On the double height central room we opened a “sky space” over the dome to inject natural sunlight into the core of the project.
To emphasize the sky dome, the surrounding walls are inclined in different angles so the natural light is inserted into the space in a more spiritual way.
Visual communication exists between all the interior recording spaces ( control room , recording booth and double height room ) although these are three different acoustic rooms, divided by folding acoustic glass doors.
The creation of 3 jungle like-gardens, one on the front, one on the back and the third on the rooftop, create framed views of nature into all of the spaces. This to fill the interiors with inspired contemplation sights.
Acoustically, we developed a system to hide all the wooden saturated cubed irregular wall tiles ( normally seen at recording studios), to create a visually clean wooden striped space.
Through this system we hid all the acoustic requirements of the project on the back of the walls and the door design integrates the same pattern to unify the space. So when doors are closed they disappear into the wooden acoustic wall pattern.
On the 2nd floor terrace, we created a rooftop with lots of vegetation, a perimetral bench was built around the sky dome and an interior lounge space for their users to go up relax and have a drink.
The concept of Chapel Studios is to integrate and solve all different musicians activities:
To host an album-release cocktail on the terrace, to record an album, to receive a foreign producer for a couple of months stay on the first floor bedroom for album production, or to have a creative song writing composition space for the band to get inspired...

Based on the four elements of nature, the design proposal consists in opening horizontal and vertical views to connect the house with all the natural surroundings.
The house is developed in 4 different levels, each one with it´s on atmosphere connected through the main 4 story high vertical patio.

A space to inspire musicians.

Why ?

We regenerated an unused space of a house in Pedregal. An interior terrace to connect different spaces inside the house, creating a contemplation view to the main garden and to the sky.
The glass proposal helps to isolate the weather from the outside creating a warmer space inside the house.

We took a 1920´house in col Anzures, reusing it´s original structure and distribution to create a new use for the space. A professional recording studio.
The essence of the project is to create a house alike experience, where musicians and users don´t feel the traditional cold spirit of a conventiontal studio. A double height central space with cenital lighting functions as the center of the project .

Christopher Koehn y Andrea Soria aplican la teoría de la arquitectura en
diferentes esferas. Sin embargo, el común denominador del trabajo que
ambos realizan es la posibilidad que tienen para analizar y estudiar los
espacios y su relación con la sociedad.

Mientras que Christopher, a través de Goko, crea y diseña proyectos
corporativos y residenciales, Andrea, desde hace 10 años, se desarrolla
como consultora en Herman Miller, empresa dedicada al diseño de
mobiliario para oficinas.

Los creativos se conocieron hace 17 años en la Universidad
Iberoamericana y aunque, en sus palabras, a él lo rige una fuerza creativa,
y a ella un carácter funcional, diversos aspectos los une y, a la vez, marcan
diferencia en su camino como profesionales de la arquitectura y el diseño.

¿Cómo entienden y asumen
la arquitectura?
C - Como la expresión espacial de
una decisión intelectual aplicada
a un contexto social. En este caso,
como una herramienta para poder
transformar la calidad de vida de las
personas.
A- Yo lo veo como una experiencia.
Creo que la arquitectura abarca
muchas cosas, pero a mí lo que más
me gusta, y lo que siento que afecta
más a los usuarios y a las organizaciones
y las personas que viven los
espacios es la experiencia que tienen
con el lugar y eso se define con
la arquitectura tanto exterior como
interior.
¿Christopher, ¿cuál ha sido
el proyecto más representativo
que has generado?
Casa 8 Jardines que hice hace un
par de años. Es un proyecto que,
originalmente, tenía mil metros cuadrados
de construcción y la idea fue
reducirlo a 700 atrás de la inserción
del jardín. Me parece que este desarrollo
fue exitoso por la capacidad
de convivencia de la arquitectura
con la naturaleza y por crear una experiencia
espacial para el usuario.
Comercialmente, justo estoy
haciendo un concept store en Dallas,
y creo que lo interesante es trabajar
con otra cultura, colaborar, cuando
es necesario, a distancia con el despacho
de allá y que ellos materialicen
el proyecto.
¿Y el tuyo, Andrea?
Haber hecho el análisis de la cultura
organizacional cuando se fusionó
una empresa mexicana de bebidas
muy grande con una americana, un
proyecto de change management
en el que culturas opuestas tuvieron
que crear una nueva. Fue muy
importante hacer el análisis de las
generaciones que iban a usar el espacio
y las generaciones que ya estaban
ahí desde hace algunos años,
cómo tenía que compaginar todo
para que crear la atmósfera perfecta.
Al final, lo que más me gustó fue
ver la evolución de cómo la gente
empezó a cambiar su actitud y su
forma de trabajar nada más por el
espacio en el que se encontraba
pues se pensó en ellos, en sus actividades
y en las herramientas que
necesitaban.
¿De qué manera su personalidad
ha marcado la pauta en su trabajo
como arquitectos?
C- Aplicando la parte multidisciplinaria.
Creo que, al final, por lo
menos en mi caso, la parte creativa
viene mucho de ligar la música, el
arte y lo culinario. Es cuando mejor
fluyen las ideas y se pueden materializar
las necesidades de un cliente
con las herramientas necesarias para
que quede algo interesante.

A- Yo empecé haciendo diseño de
interiores y finalmente me fui acercando
más a esta parte de fusión y
entender el factor humano, por eso
terminé en la consultoría. Si bien
me encanta el diseño y lo aprecio,
me enfoco en la experiencia del
usuario y de lo que significa para
esa persona. En un principio ha sido
difícil porque no es algo común
en arquitectura y los clientes no
están acostumbrados, pero con el
tiempo he visto cómo se abren al
tema porque se dan cuenta de que
la empresa está hecho de personas,
cultura y de cómo interactúa la
gente con su entorno.
Andrea, ¿cómo ha cambiado tu
perspectiva de la arquitectura a
través de los años?
Hace seis o siete años tuve la experiencia
de hacer un proyecto de
arquitectura de interiores para un
hospital para niños con cáncer, en
Seúl, y me di cuenta que necesitamos
estudiar mucho más al usuario
final. Ese fue mi primer reality
check, que no es sólo lo que Andrea
como arquitecta piensa que
debe existir. Haber hecho esto me
sensibilizó en ese sentido, y por eso,
el reto de mi carrera como arquitecta
lo he dedicado a toda la parte
de investigar al usuario que será
quien viva la experiencia.
Por otro lado, la primera parte
de mi carrera estuve en obra, y me
di cuenta que lo que uno dibuja en
papel, esa parte romántica de arquitectura,
no se puede quedar ahí.
Tienes que tener una responsabilidad
como arquitecto cuando dibujas
una línea y lo que eso implica.

¿Y en tu caso Christopher?
Cuando inicias o sales de la carrera,
tal vez, estás más enfocado en
crear un estilo en el que tienes un
gusto; pero creo que, conforme vas
desarrollando proyectos, aprendes
a plasmar ese mismo gusto con las
ideas del cliente. Yo creo más en
enfocarse en solucionar esas ideas
a través de la eficiencia de conceptos
y que un cliente quede contento
al fusionar la parte del diseño y
estilo arquitectónico.
¿Cuál es el camino de la arquitectura
con miras al futuro?
C- Pienso que cada vez hay más sinergia
y “joint inventure” como de
arquitectura de grandes despachos
creando colaboraciones. Creo que
es como un ejemplo padre de que
se puede trabajar y materializar diversos
proyectos.
A- En términos de colaboraciones,
creo que la arquitectura se está
enfocando más en especialidades.
Antes, tal vez, un mismo arquitecto
hacía todo, y con el tiempo,
creo que nos hemos dado cuenta
todos que la cantidad de factores
que involucra un proyecto son muchos
y muy diferentes y requieren
una especialización.

A Living Office for a Steel Company.

By understanding the the new ways of work and the client needs, we developed a conceptual proposal with a mixed- use layout to solve their new office program creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
Dhapsa Group, a mexican steel company needed to develop a flexible open space for their different users inside the office.
A main lounge area to receive visitors, high bench tables for the floating users without assigned spaces to work in a more informal way, wall talkers on an open workspace with to visualize their ideas. A full transparent glass meeting room that changes into a private room through a intelligent electric foil system and a one to one boot space.
